Sexting Among Teenage Girls and Boys - 1435 Words

Over the last few years, there has been a lot of discussion and debate over the topic of sexting. It has become a widespread phenomenon, the number of teenage girls and boys, men and women who participate are rapidly increasing, and with this too comes the rise of moral panic within societies. Individuals within the communities are becoming more and more fearful, afraid and shocked at this new form of youth culture hysteria. Although young people ‘expressing’ their sexuality has become much more open and free as of the last decade or so, the real uproar of panic is due to the risks they involving themselves in as well as the damage and harm they are inflicting on themselves, whether they know it or not. As stated before the technology and means to sext have always been available, so why now is there such anxiety and fear towards sexting? A reason as to why this may be so, is because of the number of teens who have committed suicide over leaked sexts. One of the most infamous cases of suicide related to this issue is of 18 year old Jesse Logan who was mercilessly harassed at the hands of her peers. She was dating a 19 year old boy and had sent him nude pictures of herself. However after they broke up, he sent those photos to another girl who then sent them to others and soon the whole school knew about it and had seen the photos. From there is where the severe bullying started. On the Today show Jesse’s friend, Lauren Taylor told NBC News about some of the abuse which was inflicted upon Jessie Logan. She says ‘When she wou ld come to school, she would always hear, â€Å"Oh, that’s the girl who sent the picture. She’s just a whore† ‘. Her mother Cynthia Logan said that ‘She was being attacked and tortured‘. Even through the bullying Jesse Logan made the decision to appear on a tv station to tell her story and make sure no one else makes the same mistake. After enduring further harassment and abuse, Jesse was finally able to graduate and looked to move on with her life.
